2018 Asia-Pacific ICH NGO Conference "ICH NGOs towards Sustainable Development of Communities"
Update: 05/11/2018 10:26:32
(6-8 November 2018 / Hue, Vietnam) ICHCAP will hold the 2018 Asia-Pacific ICH NGO Conference in Hue, Vietnam, from 6 to 8 November 2018, jointly with the Thua Thien Hue Provincial People’s Committee and Hue Monuments Conservation Center (HMCC).

It is the second conference following the previous one held in Jeonju, Korea, in November 2016. This year, the participants will discuss the subject of “ICH NGOs towards Sustainable Development of Communities”. They will share experiences on NGO activities contributing to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explore a future direction for network building.

The conference will place particular focus on quality education (SDG 4) and communities (SDG 11) and their relationship to ICH safeguarding. On the first day, the participants will share their activities and project experiences related to the roles and potential of NGOs for ICH safeguarding; ICH education for sustainable development; and inclusive development of cities and communities through ICH transmission.

The second day will start with parallel group discussions on education and communities. The participants will be able to attend in-depth presentations by NGO activists and expert panel discussions on their topic of choice in separate meeting rooms. In the afternoon, a special session will look at the ICH safeguarding policy and direction of Vietnam, where this year’s conference takes place.

On the last day, during the closing ceremony, a conference outcome document containing discussion notes and proposals will be adopted to wrap up the three-day conference. The participants will then make field visits to the Complex of Hue Monuments, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and experience how ICH is being safeguarded and transmitted in Hue City, a truly historic Vietnamese city.

Representatives of thirty-five organizations in the ICH-safeguarding field from sixteen countries will attend the conference. Among the participants are also members of the ICH NGO Forum, a UNESCO-Accredited ICH NGO. The participating organizations were selected through an application process. They are playing important roles bridging countries and communities with various aims, such as local community development, poverty alleviation, urban regeneration, and community capacity building, based on their expertise and experiences contributing to sustainable development.

ThuaThien Hue Province is cooperating with the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP) to organize the 2018 Asia-Pacific ICH NGO Conference “ICH NGOs towards Sustainable Development of Communities” in Hue, Vietnam from 6-8 November 2018. This shows the concern as well as determination of the Vietnamese government generally and Thua Thien Hue Province particularly in accompanying with ICHCAP, UNESCO and the region to ICH safeguarding for sustainable development.

The organization of the Asia-Pacific ICH Conference 2018 in Hue city in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the UNESCO’s inscription of the Nha Nhac is an event of great significance. The Conference, through insightful and unbiased assessments, will help Hue ancient capital city to promulgate policies and sustainable development directions for intangible cultural heritages in the next period, including the Nha Nhac.

ABOUT THE CO-ORGANIZERS

The International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP, www.ichcap.org) was established as a UNESCO category 2 center in 2011. Working within the framework of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, we operate information and networking programs to support UNESCO’s strategic plans among the forty-eight Member States of the Asia-Pacific region, with the ultimate goal of promoting the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals through intangible cultural heritage.

Through its central functions of information and networking, ICHCAP collects and shares information to enhance the understanding and awareness of intangible cultural heritage and supports safeguarding activities within the Asia-Pacific region by building cooperative networks.

ICHCAP works with passion to build a mechanism for effectively sharing information on intangible cultural heritage; raise the visibility of intangible cultural heritage through regional information use; strengthen networks among communities, NGOs, civil society, and related organizations, and build networks between individuals and institutions to share information and knowledge.

The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (HMCC, www.hueworldheritage.org.vn) was founded in 1982. Administratively under the control of ThuaThien Hue Province administratively and professionally reporting to the National Cultural Heritage Department (Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism), the HMCC is responsible for managing, preserving, restoring and promoting values of the Hue Monuments Complex, Vietnam’s first World Heritage property, and the Nha nhac (Hue Court Music), recognised as Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and documentary heritage of the Royal Literature on Hue Royal Architecture as well as the associated historical landscape.

The Centre includes 12 departments and has more than 750 employees, 300 of whom are graduates or post-graduates in such disciplines as architecture, construction, arts, history, literature, foreign languages, law, and Han-Nom. Many staff members have received professional education abroad to increase their knowledge and expertise in scientific research and relic preservation and restoration.

More than 130 monuments and structures have been fully and partly restored. In addition, the Center has published some 30 volumes; conducted much research; organized hundreds of NhaNhac performances; and mounted tens of exhibitions about Hue’s cultural heritage, both in Vietnam and in overseas countries. Furthermore, the Centre has collaborated with fifty of organisations, institutes and universities in Vietnam and other countries for the purposes of research and education; and cooperated with international organizations to implement many plans for the high quality conservation and restoration of local relics.
