Update: 12/11/2009 03:47:54

Emperor Thanh Thai’s real name is Nguyen Phuc Buu Lan, his nickname is Chieu. He is the 7th son of Emperor Duc Duc and Queen Tu Minh (Madam Phan Thi Dieu). He was born on February 22 of the lunar year of Ky Mao (on March 14th 1879 solar calendar).

After Emperor Dong Khanh’s death, Hue Court in agreement with French crowned Buu Lan with the title Thanh Thai on February 1st 1889.

Emperor Thanh Thai had progressive and anti-French thought, for example cutting short hair, driving cars and riding engine boats. Therefore, after his 19-year reign, under the French’s pressure, Hue Court forced him to abdicate with the reason that he was mentally sick. Then, French sent him to Vung Tau for rest and then banished in Réunion island (Africa).

In 1947, he returned to Sai Gon and lived there until his death on March 9th 1955 at the age of 77.

Emperor Thanh Thai had 45 children (19 sons and 16 girls).
