The research project of Hue cultural landscape preservation focusing on the preservation of “Community Heritage”
Within the constraint of co-research program between Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (HMCC) and the framework of the program, Hue Conservation of Cultural Heritage Preservation co-ordinated between the Hue Capital Conservation Center (HMCC) and the Waseda Institute Urban and Research Studies of Waseda University, Japan (WIURS) during the period 2014-2018, the two sides have set up the typical research contents focusing on the cultural landscape and historical ecological system in the royal tombs of the Nguyen dynasty and upstream areas of Huong River as the preparation for the effective planning and management of the cultural landscape of the Complex of Hue Monuments, and also for the re-nomination of the Complex of Hue Monuments as the World’s Cultural landscape as suggested by UNESCO. The research collaboration program is rigorously and scientifically conducted on the basis of field surveys, documentary research, and knowledge and experience exchange.

On March 20, 2018, HMCC and WIURS jointly organized a successful international symposium on "The sustainable usage and management of cultural landscapes and the historical eco-systems at royal tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty and upstream of Huong River" in Hue. The symposium does not only identify the value of cultural landscapes associated with natural elements created by humans, analyze the link between nature and people through the construction of royal tombs of the Nguyen dynasty in the upstream of Huong River, but also help highlight the OUV of the Huong River's upstream for the further enhancement of the cultural landscape in the region.

 

On July 25, 2018, the two sides did have a direct discussion for the specialized researches on the preservation of the cultural landscapes and historical eco systems at Nguyen dynasty’s royal tombs and Huong River’s upstream to carry out the recommendations and guidelines for cultural landscape preservation for the benefits of the region, especially for those of the local inhabitants.

This research targets to the protection of the cultural landscape and historical eco system of Nguyen royal tombs and Huong River’s upstream including the identification of the historical and cultural values of the region to divide the buffer zones appropriately to their functions. The research also includes the guidelines for the preservation management in an overall planning.

In the coming time, the two sides will cooperate in building the plan on the management and protection of Gia Long tomb’s landscape, which can be considered as a model of the "living museum". This looks forwards to the flexible preservation of the spiritual, historical and cultural values at Gia Long tomb and the surrounding areas pursuant to the UNESCO’s criteria. At the same time, the plan considers carry out the cultural tourist services at this and other sites of the Complex of Hue Monuments.

The research also focuses on the sustainable eco tourism model at Gia Long tomb and its surroundings as the new idea of HMCC and WIURS for the public to understand more about the traditional cultural values. It will help the locals to have more chances to work and create the local tourist products for the benefits of all.

he eco tourism tour has been built, tested and completed in the good cooperation of multi-levels of local authorities and inhabitants so that it would soon be operated.

It is hoped that the plan would successfully be operated, which helps to develop the local standard of living and attach the locals’ life with the heritage preservation. That is the special focus of the heritage sustainable preservation and enhancement as “Community Heritage”.
